February 3, 2005
Mr. Silverman,
My name is Paul Jones and I live in the state of North Carolina. I invite you to read more about me here: http://www.arid.us/people/paulej/
On Tuesday, February 1, 2005, I went to my local DMV to renew my driver's license only to find out that Indiana has inserted something into a "national driving registry". Precisely what, I have no idea. The record number is IN 2350902283. I have contacted the Indiana BMV numerous times in the past two days, as well as my own DMV here in North Carolina. My state will not budge until your state clears up the issue.
From what I have been able to gather, there seems to have been a license issued under my identity. I have never had or even attempted to acquire a driver's license in Indiana. I've never lived in Indiana. Indiana has apparently been lied to by somebody claiming to be me. What North Carolina has been able to tell me is that the person in Indiana is about 4" taller than me and have very different eye color (you have brown on file and my eyes are blue). I would guess if you look at my photo on my web site, you'll also see there is no resemblance.
I'm actually very disappointed that such a thing could go on in Indiana for such a long time. This was apparently put on file in 2002, yet Indiana made absolutely no attempt to authenticate or verify any information. A quick glance at my credit report, a call to my employer, or any number of other things could have been done to determine that the person on file-- who has apparently done something to prompt legal action-- is not me. In spite of the fact the BMV could have discovered this for themselves long ago, I'm now being forced to pay the price for the negligence and gross incompetence of the staff in your BMV.
The issue for me is quite serious: I am unable to renew my driver's license and it is absolutely no fault of mine. I cannot allow this to happen. This issue must be resolved by Indiana and I want my record cleaned in that state. I demand that this matter be resolved immediately.
You can reach me via e-mail or phone:

I do apologize for having to contact you directly, but I have tried every reasonable means to resolve this issue directly with your staff and have been left with no choice.
Please take this issue in hand immediately so that my record is clean and that I may renew my driver's license.
Thank you,
Paul E. Jones
Apex, NC
PS - Just for your information, I contacted the BMV on January 2, 2002 at 1:50PM to alert the BMV to the fact that there was a case of ID theft and that Ms. Amy Johnson of the Indiana State Police (317 233 6049) was working the case. I received a voicemail system, of course, but I left the message. I was never contacted even then, so it's no wonder that the problem has dragged out for such a long time. I guess they did not take the call seriously.
