Mayas Predict End of the World

The Mayan civilization had one of the most advanced calendars in the world, one that was even more accurate than the calendar we use today. The only disturbing thing about the calendar is that the Mayas claimed that the world would be destroyed on December 21, 2012 at 11:11:00 UTC. This time aligns with the start of winter solstice in Belize. While one might simply dismiss that out of hand, what is interesting about that particular date is that it happens to coincide with the alignment of the sun with the center of our galaxy. What's more, the sun is expected to have a high level of solar activity, the Earth's magnetic field might weaken, and there is speculation that the Earth might shift on its axis by 120 degrees. So, while this might not bring about an end of the world, there is great concern that it might cause unprecedented catastrophe.

While we do not believe it, it certainly does make for some interesting movies and TV shows to keep us all entertained for the next few years while this date comes and goes.
